Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih has met with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani during his visit to Qatar, the visit is the first high-level visit undertaken by the Maldivian president after re-establishing diplomatic ties with the Gulf country.

Solih led a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid, to Qatar to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two countries, a statement released by the Maldivian President’s Office said.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed "business and economic ties" and also ways to enhance cooperation in tackling the Covid-19 crisis. Investment opportunities, including the diversification of the economy, were also discussed in the meeting.

Earlier, in 2017, the Maldives had cut its diplomatic relations with Qatar following the Saudi-led alliance announced the boycott of Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism in the region. In January this year, after the end of the Qatar crisis, the Maldivian government reinstated its relations with Qatar.

Solih concluded his Qatar visit on Monday and departed for Bangladesh to participate in the ceremony marking the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
