Mauritania's Defense Minister announces Presidential bid

Nouakchott, Mar 2 (Sputnik) Mauritania’s Defense Minister Mohamed Ould Cheikh Mohamed Ahmed Ould El Ghazouani announced that he would run in the upcoming presidential election.

During a ceremony, held in the country’s capital of Nouakchott on Friday, the minister said that he would "seek to preserve the territorial belongings, strengthen national unity and social integrity, improve the status of women and achieve economic progress."

The country's president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, the defense minister's long-time ally who has backed his candidacy, did not attend the ceremony.

The president has repeatedly said that he would not seek re-election in the upcoming vote since spending three terms in office contradicted the country’s constitution. However, he has said that he would seek a new term if the legislation allowed him to.

Mauritania’s presidential election is planned to be held in summer.
