A US service member was killed in northern Iraq during an operation involving unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday.

Sharing details of the incident on X, CENTCOM said: "Separately, a U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone."

CENTCOM said another US service member sustained a minor injury in the incident and is currently undergoing medical treatment.

In a separate statement, CENTCOM said US forces carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran.

"CENTCOM assets targeted Iranian military command centers, air defense and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks to further diminish Iran's ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz," the command said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Iran's MEHR News Agency reported that suicide drones targeted a US logistics hub and an air surveillance radar at the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait on Sunday.

According to the report, the attacks, carried out under what it described as "Operation Thunderbolt," struck ammunition warehouses at Camp Al-Adiri, as well as Patriot missile radar systems and an air surveillance radar at the Ali Al Salem Air Base.

The Iranian news agency said Camp Al-Adiri, located about 104 kilometres from Iran's border, serves as a major logistics and combat reorganisation centre for US forces in the region.
