Mississauga, Nov 14 (IBNS): The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to investigate a multi-vehicle collision that left one person dead and 14 others injured on Highway 401 near Winston Churchill Boulevard in Mississauga on Sunday, media reports said.

The incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m, reports said.

One person found without vital signs was later pronounced dead by OPP.

The police confirmed the victim to be a 27-year-old Milton resident.

But the police did not release the name of the victim on Sunday night.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said that speed was not the cause of the crash.

Vehicles were severely damaged, he said

A passenger from the same vehicle was injured.

He was transported to hospital, police said.

13 other people received minor injuries and were being treated in the hospital.

Peel Paramedics believed four children were involved in the mishap but the exact number was not known.

During the investigation by the police, the highway was closed at Winston Churchill Boulevard for several hours.

As a result, several GO Transit bus were diverted but later returned to their normal routes.

The road completely reopened at around 11:30 p.m.

Investigation is in progress.

Witnesses have been requested to speak with the investigators.

“Officers here are appealing to anyone with more information,” Schmidt said.
