At least five tourists died after a bus carrying 54 passengers, including Indians, rolled and crashed on a New York state highway on Friday, media reports said.

New York State Police said the incident occurred on Interstate 90, eastbound between exits 48A and 49 in the town of Pembroke, Genesee County.

The tourist bus was returning to New York from Niagara Falls.

"The bus exited the roadway into the median then abruptly corrected causing the bus to overturn and roll off the I-90 on the south embankment," New York State Police said in a statement.

The injured people were taken to Erie County Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban and UMMR in Batavia.

Mercy Flight and numerous EMS and first responders assisted at the scene.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation; however, the operator had no signs of impairment, and the tour bus had no mechanical failure.

"This is still an active investigation," police said.

Mourning the loss of lives in the accident, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul wrote on X: "The @nyspolice have confirmed that among those injured in today’s bus accident in Western New York, five lives were tragically lost."

"Our hearts are with their loved ones during this difficult time," she said.
