Pakistan: Lawyers protest, prevent cops from entering court premises over 'failure to arrest dacoits'

Islamabad:  A group of Pakistani lawyers on Monday blocked the entry of police officials, including those on security duty, in the local courts premises, for 'lack of progress in six dacoities in which lawyers’ houses were targeted during the last six months.

The lawyers are demanding the transfer of  district police officer.

The lawyers from the district bar association (DBA), along with their colleagues from tehsil bar associations of Lalian and Bhowana staged a sit in and boycotted courts to press for their demand for the transfer of the DPO for alleged failure of police to arrest the dacoits and recover the booty, reports Dawn News.

Scores of lawyers, led by DBA president Mr Fateh Sher, secretary Tahir Baloch and Punjab Bar Council’s Chiniot seat member Malik Ghulam Abbas attended the sit-in staged in front of the main gate of sessions courts, the newspaper reported.

The lawyers even stopped the policemen from entering the court premise.

Due to the protest by lawyers,  the police could neither present the under-trial prisoners, nor the suspects for their physical remand, in various courts.

The lawyers chanted slogans against police and demanded Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to order transfer of the DPO and post a “competent officer” in the district who could ensure arrest of the dacoits, reports Dawn News.

“This [protest] would halt all the legal proceedings in Chiniot and government should realise the [seriousness] of the situation and take appropriate action”, warned DBA secretary Tahir Baloch.
