Islamabad: Pakistan reiterated its support to Kashmiri people in their “just struggle for the right to self-determination” and the settlement of the longstanding dispute under the UN Security Council resolutions, as hundreds of people from different walks of life organized events in 'Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK)' to pay homage to Kashmiri militant leader Burhan Muzaffar Wani, who was killed in a shootout with Indian security forces on this day in Jammu and Kashmir five years back.

Pakistan is observing the day as “resistance day”.

In a statement, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri urged India to take concrete steps towards the resolution of the Kashmir issue.

“We also call upon the international community to play its due role in this regard,” Chaudhri was quoted as saying by Dawn.

In Muzaffarabad, capital of POK, hundreds of people paraded through the main thoroughfare to express their allegiance to Burhan Wani, who died along with two associates in an encounter with the Indian army in the Kokernag area of J & K on July 8, 2016.

The participants of the rally in Muzaffarabad held a big banner and placards inscribed with slogans supporting the militants.

The Hizbul Mujahideen group, of which Wani was the top commander, took part in the rally.

In Athmuqam, district headquarters of Neelum valley, a contingent of young boys, attired in white T-shirts inscribed with anti-India slogans, staged a march while holding mock swords.
