Pakistan: PM Nawaz Sharif appears before Panama JIT

| | Jun 15, 2017, at 06:44 pm
Islamabad, June 15 (IBNS) : Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday appeared before the joint investigation team probing Panama Papers case at Federal Judicial Academy in Islamabad, Radio Pakistan said.

He will record his statement and answer queries of the JIT.

The JIT is is probing allegations of money-laundering against Sharif and his family. The investigation was mandated by the Supreme Court.

The Prime Minister's son Hassan and Hussain Nawaz have already been summoned and questioned by the JIT in recent days.

The Prime Minister reached the Academy without official protocol. Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif also accompanied him.

Radio Pakistan says it is for the first time in the country's history that an elected Prime Minister has presented himself for accountability.

According to state radio, the Prime Minister had asked the party leaders and activists not to gather outside the Federal Judicial Academy (F) when he will made his appearance before the investigation team.

The JIT had issued call-up notice to the PM  on June eight  asking him to bring all relevant record. The PM has been called as a witness to record statement, not as an accused party in the case.
