Pakistan: Rallies held in Larkana to demand arrest of 'blackmailers' in two medical students' death case

Larkana, Pakistan: A large number of people participated in a rally and held a sit-in outside the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) in Pakistan's Larkana region over failure of police in arresting the suspected blackmailers responsible for the death of two medical students, media reports said on Tuesday.

The students had allegedly committed suicide.

Nimirta Chandani, a final-year BDS student of the Bibi Aseefa Dental College was found dead in her hostel room in September 2019 and Nosheen Kazmi, a fourth-year MBBS student of the Chandka Medical College (CMC), allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room in November 2021.

Their family members say they were blackmailed to the extent that they ended their lives, reports The Dawn.

Journalists, writers and civil society activists had participated in the rally on Sunday.

The protesters also raised slogans against the SMBBMU vice chancellor for failing to protect students from harassment and blackmailing.

The demonstrators even condemned the Larkana police for not having arrested the suspects nominated in both cases.

The protesters, led by activists of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam, Jeay Sindh Student Federation and some civil society organisations, marched through various roads and then assembled outside the SMBBMU VC’s secretariat to hold a sit-in, reports Dawn News.

Speaking to them, Zafar Abro, Athar Soomro, Muhbbat Khuhro, Ashraf Kalhoro, Ahmar Phull and others were quoted as saying by Dawn News that it was quite unfortunate for that the main suspect was still at large even after the DNA report released by Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) lab disclosed that his DNA profile matched with the DNA profiles of both women.

Demanding removal of the VC, they alleged that  SMBBMU administration was hiding the truth.

They demanded a  detailed investigation into the matter.
