Pakistan: Youth plan sit-in demonstration over killing of 'blasphemy suspect' physician Dr Shah Nawaz Kunbhar

A group of youth have announced they will join the family members of Dr Shah Nawaz Kunbhar, a blasphemy suspect who was killed by police in an alleged encounter, for a sit-in demonstration in Umerkot region of Pakistan on Wednesday.

They demanded that those who torched the body of the physician must be booked.

Those who are planning to participate in the sit-in claimed they belonged to a group named ‘Sindh Youth Action Committee’

Speaking at a news conference at the local press club on Monday, the committee members, Sindhu Nawaz Ghangro, Hamz Ali Chandio, Shahid Mirani, Ali Ajiz and others, alleged that the removed senior police officers — DIG of Mirpurkhas and SSPs of Mirpurkhas and Umerkot — were directly involved in Dr Kunbhar’s extrajudicial killing, reported Dawn News.

They claimed the officers should be arrested and a the case should be investigated by an impartial officer.

They told Dawn News that the FIR of Dr Shah Nawaz’s custodial killing should be registered without any further delay against these senior police officers.

They urged Sindh-based civil organizations to participate in the September 25 sit-in demonstration.

Shah Nawaz Kunbhar was allegedly shot dead by police in an alleged extra-judicial killing on Thursday, triggering widespread condemnation.

He was killed just a day after he was accused of blasphemy.
