Pompeo discusses Syria with UK, French counterparts - State Dept

Washington, Mar 6 (Sputnik/UNI): US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in calls with his French and British counterparts on Tuesday discussed the international coalition's progress in the fight against the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia) in Syria and Iraq, US Department of State spokesperson Robert Palladino said in news release.

“Today ... Pompeo and French Foreign Minister Le Drian discussed global efforts in the fight to defeat ISIS [Islamic State], especially in Iraq and Syria," the release said.
In a separate release, the State Department said Pompeo spoke with UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt about securing the coalition's progress in Syria.

 

Their conversation also included covered several other key issues, such as countering Iran and the denuclearization of North Korea.


The US-led coalition, which consists of more than 70 countries, is conducting military operations against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

The coalition's operations in Syria are not authorized by the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
