Russia detains US citizen on suspicion of espionage

Moscow, Dec 31 (IBNS):  Russia’s Federal Security Service has detained a US citizen over suspicion of espionage from country's Moscow city, media reports said on Monday.

The detained US citizen was identified as Paul Whelan.

"On December 28, 2018 staff members of the Russian Federal Security Service detained US citizen Paul Whelan in Moscow while on a spy mission," the TASS news agency reported quoting the official public relations centre of the country.

A criminal investigation into espionage has been initiated against the detained person.

The news agency further reported that if found guilty, the detained US man faces between 10 and 20 years in jail.
