Islamabad, Nov 6 (IBNS): Sharbat Gula, who gained recognition after featuring in the National Geographic cover, will not be deported to Afghanistan, media reports said.

Pakistani media Dawn.com reported this news by quoting  government official Shaukat Yousafzai on Saturday.

Gula will complete her 15-day sentence on Wednesday.

She was on Friday summoned by a special anti-corruption and immigration court in Peshawar.

The court had ordered her to be deported to Afghanistan after serving her jail term.

The decision to not deport her to Afghanistan was taken on humanitarian grounds and as a goodwill gesture towards to the country, Dawn.com reported.

Gula became popular across the globe after making it to a National Geographic cover.

The Federal Investigation Agency has filed interim chargesheet against Gula in connection with  a case related to forgery to secure Pakistani Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC).

Her bail petition was rejected by a Pakistani court on Nov 2.

Judge Farah Jamshed Khan, who has dismissed bail petition of Sharbat Gula on Nov 2, has directed that the suspect should be produced on Friday, official sources told Dawn News.

Sharbat Gula, also known as Sharbat Bibi, is an Afghan woman who was living as a refugee in Pakistan during the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan when she was photographed.

Sharbat Gula was the subject of  journalist  Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl.
