Spain likely to impose direct rule over Catalonia

| @indiablooms | Oct 21, 2017, at 04:47 pm
Madrid, Oct 21 (IBNS): Spain is likely to impose a direct rule over the disputed Catalonia region, though a final verdict will be declared after Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy meets with his cabinet to discuss the issue.

According to reports, Rajoy will be meeting with his cabinet members for the first time since the disputed elections took place on Oct 1.

Catalonia, demanding independence from Spain, held an election on the said date, resulting in a 43 percent turnout.

At least 90 percent of the voters supported the Catalonia government's decision, while most anti-independence voters decided to ditch the ballot.

With Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont adamant about forming a separate nation, experts feel that the Spanish government can crack a whip and impose Article 155 of the constitution.

The mentioned article will allow the government to impose a direct rule, however, it will not allow it to fully disable autonomy.

Other measures may include taking back control of Catalan regional police.
