Sri Lanka installs automated face recognition system at main airport to nab criminals

| @indiablooms | Jan 07, 2024, at 08:11 am

Colombo: An automated face recognition system has been installed at the Bandaranaike International Airport, the main airport in Sri Lanka, to trace people accused of drug trafficking and other criminal activities, the police said on Saturday.

The police said the system was set up as part of an operation launched recently to curb narcotics-related offences and other organised criminal activities.

The police claim that artificial intelligence and a cutting-edge technology-driven system would be utilised to apprehend offenders who go overseas with falsified passports.

The police have launched a special operation to curb drug-related offences and other criminal activities since December 17, 2023, with more than 25,000 people arrested.
