Tiyas Airbase: Syria, Russia blame Israel for deadly attack

Damascus, Apr 9 (IBNS): The Syrian and Russian governments have blamed Israel for carrying out the deadly attack at the Tiyas Airbase, reports said on Monday.

At least 14 people were killed on Monday as the military airport came under attack.

Israel has not commented on the issue so far.

Syria had earlier blamed US for the attack.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has pinned the blame on Russia and Syria over an alleged chemical attack on a Syrian rebel-held town.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria. Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad. Big price to pay. Open area immediately for medical help and verification. Another humanitarian disaster for no reason whatsoever. SICK!" Trump tweeted on Sunday.

He also took a swipe at his predecessor Barack Obama.

"If President Obama had crossed his stated Red Line In The Sand, the Syrian disaster would have ended long ago! Animal Assad would have been history!" Trump said.

Quoting a military source, Syrian state news agency Sana reported that its air force had repelled an Israeli missile attack on the Tiyas Airbase.

It further said that the missiles were fired by Israeli F15 jets using Lebanese airspace.

The Russian Defence Ministry said that eight missiles were fired.

It said that out of the eight, five were shot down by the country's air defences, while three missiles hit the airbase.

Weighing in on the issue, France had said that it's keeping a close eye on the situation.

In a joint-statement on Sunday, US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, vowed to "co-ordinate a strong, joint response."

Russia too has warned retaliation.

Moscow said that there will be dire consequences if the West uses this as an excuse to attack Syria.
