Toronto, May 4 (IBNS): Mayor John Tory has proclaimed May 2017 as South Asian Heritage Month for the City of Toronto, Canada, according to media reports.

Tory acknowledged that valuable contributions from multicultural communities of Toronto make it one of the world’s most multicultural cities and contributes to the city's motto "Diversity Our Strength".

In 1993, it was Toronto that mooted the idea of celebrating May as Asian Heritage Month, an idea which later spread to other Canadian Cities. May was proclaimed as both Asian Heritage Month and South Asian Heritage Month.

The Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division has extended an invitation to all Torontonians to take part in events and educational outreach programs organised by various Community Centres for Asian/South Asian Heritage Month.

Tory said Toronto has become a model city which respects and accepts all faiths and religions and added that the city of Toronto’s social, political, cultural and economical aspects draw their strength from Toronto’s diversity.

He said, “South Asian Heritage Month acknowledges the long and rich histories of South Asians in Canada and celebrates the growth, vibrancy and prosperity they have brought to our diverse city."
