Anchorage, Alaska: US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday for discussions on the Ukraine war, exchanging two handshakes and engaging in a friendly yet animated conversation on the tarmac, according to media reports.

After arriving at a US military base, the two leaders took part in a choreographed red carpet greeting ahead of their talks, reported CNN.

The meeting, initially expected to be one-on-one, is now being attended by senior US and Russian officials.

White House and Kremlin aides have not disclosed the full agenda, but the conflict in Ukraine is understood to be the main focus.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited to the summit, said Kyiv is “counting on America” and noted there was “no indication” Moscow is prepared to end hostilities.
