At least 18 people were injured after two explosions occurred near the Ministry of Tourism in Syria's capital, Damascus, on Tuesday, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to the country.

Despite the blasts, Macron's official visit continued as scheduled.

In a statement to SANA, Syria's Ministry of Interior said the Internal Security Forces detected two explosive devices during field operations, following which specialized units began efforts to safely defuse them.

The explosions took place while preparations were underway for the disposal of the devices. Authorities immediately cordoned off the area to ensure civilian safety, while specialized teams launched search, clearance and security operations in the surrounding locations.

Preliminary investigations suggested that both devices were improvised explosive devices, the ministry said.

According to local media reports, one explosive device was placed inside a vehicle parked along the roadside, while the other was hidden inside a garbage container.

A probe has been launched to identify those responsible for planting the explosives and determine the circumstances behind the incident.

An eyewitness told the BBC that the first explosion caused property damage but no casualties, while the second blast injured several members of the public security forces and traffic police.

Reacting to the explosions, Macron wrote on X that “nothing can smother the aspiration of Syrian women and men to live in a fully sovereign, safe, pluralistic, and united Syria.”

“This morning I put Syria in all its diversity. I saw dignity, courage, and determination. My visit continues,” he added.
