Tokyo, July 8 (IBNS) A typhoon lashed Japan's southernmost island prefecture of Okinawa, making people to seek shelter while all flights and ferry services were cancelled on Tuesday, reports said.

Strong wind and heavy rains have been reported from the area.

As Typhoon Neoguri lashed the area, authorities directed people, who stay in the area, to stay indoors or go to community centres for shelter.

"Typhoon Neoguri, the season's eighth typhoon, is now forecast to head northward over the East China Sea, approaching the main island of Kyushu and possibly even making landfall there on Thursday. The weather agency also said there is a possibility the typhoon may affect eastern Japan where Tokyo is located,"  the Kyodo News Agency reported  on Tuesday.

Several people have been injured so far, reports said.
