UNESCO world heritage site Minaret of Jam is now on brink of collapsing: Afghan Officials

Kabul: The Taliban government of Afghanistan has said the Minaret of Jam, which is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-declared world heritage site, is on the brink of collapse, media reports said.

The iconic building is located in the Ghor province.

“If attention is not paid to the condition of the minaret, we will soon see the collapse of the minaret and it is a big shame. The officials at UNESCO should pay attention to this issue,” Abdul Hai, head of Ghor's information and culture department, told Tolo News.

A civil activist said no attention has been paid to maintain the structure for the past 20 years.

“During the past 20 years, no attention was paid to protect the minaret. Now, we are extremely concerned that the minaret will collapse in the coming winter,” Hassan Hakim, a civil rights activist, told the Afghan media outlet.

The structure is located in a remote and nearly inaccessible region of the Shahrak District in Ghor Province, next to the Hari River.

Since 2002, the minaret has remained on the list of World Heritage in Danger, under serious threat of erosion, and has not been actively preserved.
