Washington, Mar 5 (Sputnik/UNI) US and Japanese military forces conducted a computerized joint exercise to integrate air and missile defense systems, US Pacific Command said in a press release.

"Resilient Shield is an annual computer-based Fleet Synthetic Training-Joint (FST-J) exercise held within the Commander, US 7th Fleet area of Operations (AOO) and other command centers throughout the region," the release stated on Monday.

The exercise focused on ballistic missile defense (BMD) with Japanese warships, the US 7th Fleet's forward deployed ships, and air forces of both nations, the release said.

The missile defense mission is one of many missions that the US and allies practice on a regular basis to maintain maximum proficiency and cooperation, the release added.

Japan began developing a layered missile defense system in 2004, which today uses ships equipped with Aegis interceptors as well as land-based Patriot interceptors, according to a Japan Defense Ministry website.
