US Navy ship collides with merchant vessel near Straits of Malacca

Washington, Aug 21 (IBNS): At least 10 sailors are missing following a collision between Guided missile-destroyer USS John S McCain and a merchant vessel near the Strait of Malacca, an official release has stated.

The incident took place on Monday.

The statement said that five have sustained injuries.

"Four of the injured were medically evacuated by a Singapore Armed Forces helicopter to a hospital in Singapore for non-life threatening injuries. The fifth injured Sailor does not require further medical attention," the statement read.

A search operation is under way.

"The Republic of Singapore Fearless-class patrol ships RSS Gallant (97), RSS Resilience (82), and Singaporean Police Coast Guard vessel Basking Shark (55) are in the area rendering assistance," according to the release.

Meanwhile, reacting to the news, US President Donald trump tweeted, "Thoughts & prayers are w/ our @USNavy sailors aboard the #USSJohnSMcCain where search & rescue efforts are underway."
