US: New York to mandate COVID vaccination proofs for entry at restaurants, gyms

New York/IBNS: New York will become the first major city in the US to require proof of vaccination for both customers as well as staff in restaurants and gymnasiums, media reports said on Tuesday.

As the country is battling the highly infectious Delta variant spread, the announcement was made alongside a string of initiatives taken to encourage people to get vaccinated in the US.

About 60 percent of all residents of New York have so far received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, Reuters reported, quoting city data.

But several areas, especially poor communities and communities of color, have lower vaccination rates.

The policy of providing proof of vaccination for all major indoor businesses will be effective from September 13.

On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had urged bars, restaurants and other private businesses to require that customers be vaccinated to avail services.
