US plans to reopen land border to fully vaccinated Canadians from next month

Ottawa/IBNS: Senior United States (U.S.) officials announced Tuesday night that starting early November, the country would allow fully vaccinated Canadians to enter the at land and ferry border crossings, which have been closed for non-essential travel since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Reporters were briefed by the U.S. senior administration officials earlier during a conference call and were told that an exact date for the reopening has not yet been determined as the details are still being worked out, including the type of documentation that will be accepted to prove a traveler's vaccination status.

The US is still awaiting guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about travelers who received mixed doses of COVID-19 vaccines or the AstraZeneca vaccine, as the mixing of vaccine doses or the AstraZeneca vaccine for its own residents, has not been approved by the US

However, it was noted by an official on the call that the CDC plans to recommend the acceptance of air travelers who have been inoculated with any vaccine approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization including AstraZeneca, and added that a similar rule should be expected at land crossings.

Canadians crossing the border will be required to show their vaccination status to the border agents, said the U.S. officials.
