US President Donald Trump declares national emergency to build border wall

Washington DC, Feb 15 (IBNS): US President Donald Trump today said he would declare a national emergency on the southern border to unlock money to build his proposed wall.

"We're going to be signing today... and registering national emergency," said President Trump at a White House press briefing. "It's a great thing to do because we have an invasion of drugs, invasion of gangs, invasion of people... and it's unacceptable."

Congress has given the President around $1.4 billion for border barriers, which is much less than the $5.7 billion Trump had said he needed to build the wall.

"We want to stop drugs from coming into our country. We want to stop criminals and gangs from coming into our country," Trump said, adding that several presidents had in the past declared national emergencies, including President Obama.

Trump said Obama had declared a national emergency on an issue concerning cartels.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had earlier said declaring such an emergency would be a "gross abuse of the power of the presidency."
