Jackson, Jul 11 (IBNS): At least 16 people were reported dead after a military plane crashed in the Mississippi delta on Monday, reports said.

The casualties were confirmed by Fred Randle, the emergency management director in Leflore county, Mississippi.

The aircraft has been identified as a KC-130, generally used by the Marines.

The cause of the crash is yet not clear

"A USMC KC-130 mishap occurred the evening of July 10. Further information will be released as available," The US Marine Corps Twitter account posted.

Condoling the incident, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant's social media post read: "Please join Deborah and me in praying for those hurting after this tragedy. Our men and women in uniform risk themselves every day to secure our freedom."

The KC-130 is a four engine propeller driven aircraft.
