London, Feb 12 (IBNS): The London City Airport was closed down after a World War two bomb was recovered from the nearby Thames river.

The incident took place on Sunday during a pre-planned work at the airport.

The airport was shut after bomb specialists confirmed that the device was explosive.

The airport authorities have urged all passengers to avoid travelling to the facility, through a Twitter post.

"Following the discovery of a World War Two ordnance in King George V Dock as part of planned development works, a 214m exclusion zone has been implemented as a precaution by the Met Police. As a result, London City Airport is currently closed," a London City Airport tweet read.

It added, "All passengers due to travel from London City on Monday are advised to contact their airline for further information. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport until further notice."

Some roads near the airport have been cordoned off too.
