After six resignations, Congress flies 44 MLAs out of Gujarat

Ahmedabad, July 28 (IBNS): In a last minute damage control, the Congress party is flying out 44 of its Gujarat legislators to Bangalore on Friday late evening after six of them reigned in two days and out of which three joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The measure is seen as a last minute damage control by the party.

According to NDTV report, about 11 Congress MLAs had been sequestered in Rajkot till late evening on Friday.

Fifteen of them were kept at a resort in Borsad about 240 km away, where party chief Bharat Solanki held a meeting with them.

The Congress has blamed the BJP for influencing their MLAs with "money and muscle power."

The party now has 51 MLAs in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly.

In a major blow to the Congress after the resignation of Shankersinh Vaghela,  three of its senior legislators in the Gujarat Assembly resigned on Thursday.

On Friday, two more resigned from the party.

One of the legislators who has quit is Balwantsinh Rajput, the Congress' chief whip in the assembly.

Within hours of resignation, three MLAs who left Congress on Thursday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The shift to the BJP camp by the Congress MLAs can be considered as benefit for the saffron party in the upcoming Rajya Sabha poll in the state.

The BJP has already announced the names of party President Amit Shah and Union textile minister Smriti Irani for the RS poll to be held on August 8.
