Assam rape and murder : Seven teenagers arrested

Guwahati, May 12 (IBNS) : Police on Friday arrested seven teenagers, all likely to be minors, on charges of alleged rape and murder of a 20-year old girl in West Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday night.

According to the reports, the accused persons committed the crime when the girl  was returning to her home after  attending a cultural programme with a male friend in the Tamulguri area  under Baithalangso police station.

The next day local people found her body hanging from a tree.

Among those arrested is the victim's male friend.

A top police official said, " we are awaiting  the statement of the victim's male friend and investigation is going on."

The accused have denied their involvement in the crime.

The police official said that several injury marks have been found on the victim's body.

A case of rape and murder  has been registered at Baithalangso police station.

According to official figures, over  10,000 women were raped in Assam over the past one decade.

According to the reports of Assam police, 1723 rape cases were registered in the state last year.
