New Delhi/UNI: Hitting out at the Narendra Modi government over hike in tariffs for prepaid call and data services, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said the BJP government has weakened BSNL and MTNL paving the way for private companies to make mobile services expensive.

The Congress general secretary also accused the BJP of continuously cutting the public's pocket to benefit its ''rich friends''.

"BJP had been boasting about making mobile Internet and calls cheaper for the last six years. Now everything has gone, like hot air. BJP weakened BSNL, MTNL and opened the way for private companies to make calls and data expensive. It is continuously cutting the public's pockets to benefit its rich friends," Vadra tweeted in Hindi.

On Sunday, private telecom companies like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio had announced 40 per cent increase in tariffs for its prepaid users.

While the the Airtel and the Vodafone had announced that their new tariff will be effective from December 3, the Reliance decided to implement it from December 6.

According to media reports, these three private companies together hold for over 90 per cent of country's 1.18 billion mobile subscribers.
