CAA protest: Curfew relaxed for 12 hours in Mangaluru today
Mangaluru/UNI: The coastal city Mangaluru, which witnessed the violence during the Citizenship Amendment Act protests, was limping back to normalcy, with 12 hours relaxation was given in the curfew from 6 hrs on Sunday.
Auto-rickshaws and other vehicles are plying on roads. Many shops and hotels are open in the central business district area.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is visiting the city in the forenoon and will meet the families of two persons who died in the violent incidents on Thursday.
The main Central Market is open and fish business in the Old Port has resumed.
Mobile internet data services have been restored.
As Christmas approaches, people began shopping and visiting churches for special prayers on Sunday.
Since Thursday night, garbage had piled up outside houses and apartments as civic workers did not turn up for duty owing to the curfew. It is expected to be cleared on Sunday.
The curfew will be lifted from 6 hrs on Dec 23.
Streets and markets started brimming with people when the curfew was relaxed in the city.
After the violent protest in the city, the administration had imposed a curfew from Dec 19 to 22.
Protests against the CAA soon turned violent and stone-pelting leading to police opening fire resulting in the death of two persons.
CM Yediyurappa had asked the district administration to relax the curfew between 3 hrs to 6 pm on Saturday and between 9 hrs to 6 pm on Sunday.
Even the curfew will be lifted completely from Monday onwards, however, there will be 144 section prohibition will be continued till the situation turn to completely normalcy.
The mobile internet services, which were suspended after violence in Mangaluru, have started from around 10 pm on Saturday.
The internet services have been made available to the Airtel, Reliance Jio users while BSNL and Vodafone networks have not resumed the internet services yet.
City bus services will be available as usual on Sunday (Dec 22) following the relaxation in curfew, Dil Raj Alva, president of the District Bus Owners Association, said in a statement.
Even though there was an incident in which a 30-year-old man was reportedly stabbed by two miscreants on Saturday, which not related to protest or violence in the city.
