Delhi government budgets for the aam aadmi
Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, who is also the Finance Minister, presented an annual budget of Rs 46,000 crore for 2016-17, which is more than Rs 8,850 crore from the previous year.
The planned expenditure has been pegged at Rs 20,600 crore and non-planned at Rs 26,000 crore, said Sisodia.
In his Budget, Sisodia said that VAT on sweets and snacks and ready-made garments as well as footwear and school bags has been reduced from 12.5% to 5%.
The Budget has made provisions of Rs 10 crore for Aam Admi canteens, where people, especially migrant workers, will get nutritious meals at a low cost.
It has set aside Rs 1600 crore so that the subsidy in electricity bill can continue.
During his budget speech, Sisodia said that the odd-even experiment to reduce traffic pollution in Delhi has been widely praised.
Some of the budgetary provisions to improve Delhi's traffic condition and pollution level include cleaning of roads with vacuum cleaners, increasing the number of air quality monitoring centres to nine from six, allocating Rs 763 crore to Delhi Metro, redesigning of 11 roads to allow people to cycle, introduction of non AC buses and construction of new bus depots, two new elevated BRT corridor and renovation of existing bus terminals.
He said that the budgetary provision for the Delhi Municipal Corporation has been increased by Rs 1000 crore.
Sisodia said the Budget has kept Rs 676 crore to provide drinking water through pipeline to every colony by December 2017.
Sisodia said that Rs 10,690 crore has been set aside for the education sector.
The Budget has allocated Rs 102 crore for advance training of government school teaches while Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the installation of CCTVs in each classroom. Rs 48 crore has been kept for sports facilities in schools.
Sisodia also said that teachers will be recruited in 2016-17.
He mentioned that 100 new mohalla clinics will be opened.
The minister said that luxury tax will be applicable on hotels charging Rs 1500 or above, which he expects will benefit the hotel industry.
