Fire in Kerala temple kills 80

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 10 (IBNS): At least 80 people were killed as a fire broke out at a temple in Kerala's Kollam district on Sunday, reports said.

The fire mishap, which started at around 3 am, was reportedly triggered by fireworks.

The incident occurred during an ongoing festival at Puttingal Devi temple.

More than 150 people have been injured in the mishap who were taken to different hospitals in the area for treatment.

The fire has been reportedly brought under control.

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh  spoke to state CM Oommen Chandy over the mishap.

"Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending & shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured," Modi tweeted.

" Spoke to CM Oommen Chandy about the fire at a temple in Kollam. Arranging for immediate shifting of those critically injured via helicopter," he said.

Rajnath Singh mourned the loss of lives in the mishap and tweeted: "The news of major fire at Puttingal temple in Kollam is deeply distressing. Extremely pained over the loss of lives in the accident.My heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died in Kollam accident. My prayers are with the injured."

"Spoke to Kerala CM Sh.Chandy regarding the Kollam accident who apprised me of the situation.Assured him of all possible help from the Centre," he said.
