GST: Double taxation forces theatre owners to down shutters in TN

| | Jul 04, 2017, at 05:14 pm
Chennai, Jul 4 (IBNS): The Goods and Services Tax (GST), a sweeping tax reform in India, has already claimed its first victim, within few days of its roll out.

Unable to bear the burden of paying 58 percent tax, theatre owners in India's Tamil Nadu have downed shutters, according to media reports.

The double taxation (30 percent state entertainment + 28 percent GST) will lead to higher ticketing prices in Tamil Nadu, thus creating an imbalance in the southern region.

Tamil theatre owners have said that they are not against the government, but added that it is nearly impossible for them to ply their trade under the existing laws.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka film industry has enjoyed 100 percent tax exemption from the state government, adding to the woes of its Tamil neighbours.
