Guwahati, Oct 1 (IBNS) : Kashmiri separatist terror group Hizbul Mujahideen has reportedly set up at least 8-10 sleeper cells in Assam over the past two years and has sent five states from the youth to Pakistan and Pak-occupied Kashmir for arms training, police said.

The organisation has also plans to set up a transit camp in the state, while trying to reach out to the Rohingyas in the north-east.

The Assam police have got these  sensational pieces of information during interrogation of the  Hizbul operatives, arrested recently from different parts of the state.

After arrest of Qamar-uz-Zaman, a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, by the Lucknow Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) from Kanpur on September 12, the Assam police  arrested eight Hizbul operatives from several areas of the state.

A top official of Assam police said, "the Kashmiri terrorist group sent five Assam youths to Pakistan and Pak-occupied Kashir for arms training. Two among those five have been identified b the police," he said.

“We have collected information about missing youths from several areas of central Assam’s Hojai, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, lower Assam’s Barpeta, Goalpara, Bongaigaon districts. The terrorist group was trying to get in touch with Rohingyas in  the North Eastern region with the help of some organisations and groups,” the official said.

Among the Hizbul members, arrested by the state police is 39-year-old Shahnawaz Alam, a childhood friend of  Qamar-uz-Zaman. Alam's elder brother Saiful has also been arrested.

According to the police, Qamar-uz-Zaman had visited Assam in August last and travelled few areas in Hojai, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Barpeta districts.

Qamar-uz-Zaman, who failed in his BA third year examination, underwent training in Pakistan under the ISIS in 2017 and  and joined Hizbul Mujahideen.T

In order to get Qamar-uz-Zaman's custody, the Assam police have contacted their Uttar Pradesh. A team of Assam police is likely to visit Uttar Pradesh this week.
