New Delhi, Oct 3 (IBNS): Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday was sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

The swearing-in ceremony was administered by President Ram Nath Kovind.

CJI Gogoi succeeded Dipak Misra, who retired on Oct 1.

The term of the new CJI will end in November next year.

CJI Gogoi's name was recommended by retired CJI Misra as the former was the second-most senior judge. . CJI Gogoi is the first person from northeastern India to assume the post.

Born in Dibrugarh Assam, CJI Gogoi became a permanent judge at the Gauhati High Court in 2001.

He was transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2010 and became its Chief Justice a year later.

In January this year, Gogoi was one of the four senior-most judges (after then CJI Misra) of the Supreme Court to address an unprecedented press conference to allege that the then CJI was assigning cases of far-reaching consequences selectively.

The four judges even said their press conference was prompted by CJI Misra's allocating of death case of special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge BH Loya to Justice Arun Mishra.

Judge Loya was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case in which ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Amit Shah was an accused. Later, the CBI had acquitted Shah.

At present, CJI Gogoi is monitoring the update process of Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is intended to find out the immigrants. He is also looking into the plea seeking Lokpal bill.
