Thrissur, Kerala, May 5 (IBNS) : Thrissur Pooram, one of the most prominent annual festivals in Kerala, began on Friday amid pomp and fanfare, reports said.

The 36-hour long festival  is held at the revered Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur on the day of Pooram, as per the Malayalam calendar month of Medam.

The celebration includes a huge fleet of caparisoned elephants with their mahouts taking part in an ostentatious procession.

The festival is characterized by sounds of the crescendo of panchavadyam (five different musical instruments) and colourful processions with elephants followed by spectacular  fireworks display.
