Kolkata: Bodies of 14 newborn babies recovered from Haridevpur

Kolkata, Sept 2 (IBNS): Remains of at least 14 newborn babies were recovered from a compound at Raja Rammohan Sarani area under Haridevpur Police Station limits in southwest Kolkata on Sunday, reports said.

According to reports, while cleaning a land at 215, Raja Rammohan Sarani, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)'s labourers and locals found the remains which were packed in plastic bags and called in the police.

Policemen from local police station, Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee and city police commissioner Rajeev Kumar rushed to the scene and after being recovered, remains of the newborn babies were sent for post mortem and other tests.

"From the compound in Haridevpur, we have recovered 14 newborn babies' remains, few of which were partly decomposed," a local police official told IBNS.

Police have started an investigation into the matter.

"Besides sending those remains for post mortem and forensic tests, we have initiated a probe into the matter and our search operation in the compound is currently on to confirm if no more baby's body or remains was dumped there," the official added.
