Malaysia Airlines flight with 185 on board makes emergency landing in Chennai after engine failure
A Malaysia Airlines flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah made an emergency landing at Chennai airport on Monday evening after reporting a technical problem involving one of its engines.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH156, operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft registered as 9M-MTY, was carrying 186 people on board when it was diverted to Chennai.
Full emergency declared
Chennai airport authorities declared a full emergency at 4.07 pm IST after the aircraft reported a problem with Engine No. 2.
The flight was initially expected to arrive at 4.40 pm but landed safely at 4.44 pm. The aircraft was subsequently assigned Bay 45, where emergency response teams had already been placed on standby.
According to an official statement from Chennai airport, the flight was diverted after Engine No. 2 failed.
‘Smooth landing, all passengers safe’
A senior Chennai airport official told NDTV that the landing was completed without any incident.
“It was a smooth landing. All passengers are safe,” the official said.
There were no reports of injuries among the 186 people on board.
Technical teams assess aircraft
Airport authorities said the aircraft and the reported technical issue were being examined by Malaysia Airlines and the relevant technical teams.
Further details about the nature of the engine failure and arrangements for the passengers' onward journey are awaited.
