New Delhi, Sept 1 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Indian Digambara monk Muni Tarun Sagar, who passed away on Saturday.

Tarun Sagar, 51, died after battling jaundice.

Modi tweeted, "Deeply pained by the untimely demise of Muni Tarun Sagar Ji Maharaj. We will always remember him for his rich ideals, compassion and contribution to society. His noble teachings will continue inspiring people. My thoughts are with the Jain community and his countless disciples."

Born as Pawan Kumar Jain, Tarun Sagar became popular due to television programme Mahavira Vani.

He had close relationships with several politicians of the country.

At an event of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Tarun Sagar had pointed out that leather belts do not symbolise non-violence. Subsequently, leather belts in the RSS' dress were replaced with canvas ones.

He had convinced Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan not to open new liquor shops in the state in June, 2010.

Tarun Sagar had also started a movement to stop export of meat and leather from India.

In 2012, Modi, the then Gujarat Chief Minister, had presented Tarun Kranti Purashkar to the monk.
