PM Modi wishes nation on May Day

New Delhi, May 1 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wished the nation on the occasion of Labour Day.

"Today, on Labour Day we salute the determination & hardwork of countless workers who play a big role in India's progress. Shrameva Jayate!," Modi tweeted.

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on May 1.

It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival.

It is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures.

Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the celebrations that the day includes.

The day is also known as International Workers' Day. It is a celebration of the international labour movement and left-wing movements.

Across different parts of the world, the day commonly witnesses organized street demonstrations and marches by working people and their labour unions.

May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries.

May Day is a nationwide bank and public holiday in India.

The holiday is tied to labour movements for communist and socialist political parties.
