Powerful IED recovered in Manipur

Guwahati, Apr 9 (IBNS): A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was recovered by the Assam Rifles personnel on Imphal-Ukhrul road on Saturday evening, officials said on Sunday.

The IED was recovered from a spot which is about 15 km away from Ukhrul town.

An Assam Rifles official said that Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh is scheduled to travel on that way where the IED recovered.

The Manipur CM is scheduled to visit Ukhrul town in Ukhrul district on April 11 to meet several social organizations.

A troop of 27 Assam Rifles found the IED from a culvert which was wrapped in a polythene bag.

"Security personnel found the bomb during a search operation at the area," the Assam Rifles official said.

Later, the bomb squad team defused the IED.

Manipur police suspected that militants plotted the bomb on the CM's scheduled route.

Following the incident, tight security has been arranged on the road and Assam Rifles troops cordoned the area.
