Ludhiana, Oct 20 (IBNS): A day after 60 people, who were standing on railway tracks, were crushed to death when a train ran over them as they were watching the burning of Ravana effigy, the Punjab government ordered a state mourning on Saturday.

All offices and educational institutions will remain shut in the state on Saturday.

The accident took place at Dhobi Ghat near Jaura Phatak at 6:45 pm on Friday.

The train was on its way from Jalandhar to Amritsar.

According to reports, a huge crowd gathered at the railway tracks to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.

When the first train came, they could not hear the sound due to exploding crackers.

According to reports, a second train also ran over the people.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered an inquiry into the accident.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said the Railways conducted immediate relief and rescue operations.
