Chennai/IBNS: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's DMK is set for a sweeping victory in the urban local body elections which were held last Saturday, media reports said.

The counting of votes began at 8 am on Tuesday.

DMK, which has been ruling the state since 2021, is leading in 289 of 1,374 corporation wards.

AIADMK has so far emerged as a distant second with only 49 seats.

AIADMK's former ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which rules the country but has a negligible presence, is leading in three seats.

The urban local body polls are being held after a gap of 10 years.

Stalin became the Chief Minister last year after the DMK uninstalled the AIADMK government in the state.
