Sunjay Kapur’s estate row: Karisma Kapoor’s children cry forgery, Priya Sachdev called 'Cinderella’s stepmother'

“She is like Cinderella’s stepmother,” Jethmalani remarked during a fiery exchange in court, accusing Sachdev Kapur of being in an “unseemly rush” to curtail the children’s inheritance.

The veteran lawyer went further, branding her “greedy” and alleging she had cornered 60% of Sunjay Kapur’s assets, granted 12% to her son, and secured control over 75% of the family trust.

The proceedings stem from a petition filed by Samaira (20) and Kiaan Kapoor (15), who have contested their late father’s alleged will dated March 21, 2025, calling it a forgery and a conspiracy. They have urged the court to maintain status quo over the assets to prevent any third-party transfers.

Describing the disputed will as a “manifestly forged document,” the petitioners alleged that it leaves Sunjay Kapur’s entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur, effectively disinheriting them and their grandmother, Rani Kapur.

“The forgery of a will carries life imprisonment,” Jethmalani argued. “This is a case that mocks the justice system itself.”

He maintained that the will bore none of the hallmarks of a document prepared by a legal professional. “It’s such a clumsy forgery that no competent lawyer would claim to have drafted it,” he told the bench. “It’s impossible that a man of Sunjay Kapur’s stature would create such a document without legal counsel.”

Jethmalani further claimed that the will was altered while Kapur was away on holiday with his son. “Between March 15 and 18, Sunjay was travelling with Kiaan. Yet, the will was modified on March 17. But by whom? Certainly not by Sunjay,” he alleged.

According to him, the electronic file containing the will was stored on a device belonging to another individual- someone who, he claimed, was later made a director in one of Kapur’s companies.

“The people who forged the will were rewarded,” he asserted, naming Nitin Sharma, an associate of Priya Sachdev Kapur, as one of the key beneficiaries. Sharma, along with another aide Dinesh Agarwal, has been accused of concealing the will for weeks before producing it at a family meeting.

Responding to the allegations, Priya Sachdev Kapur’s lawyer, Rajiv Nayar, told the court that the children had already received ₹1,900 crore from the RK Family Trust.

“What more do they want?” Nayar asked, suggesting the petition was unnecessary.

Jethmalani, however, dismissed the claim. “They were not given anything,” he said. “No reason has been furnished for their exclusion, and even Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has been entirely left out.”

Rani Kapur herself has separately challenged the will, alleging that her daughter-in-law took over her son’s estate and ignored more than 15 emails she sent seeking transparency about the assets.

Sunjay Kapur died suddenly in June 2025, collapsing during a polo match in the United Kingdom. He was earlier married to Karisma Kapoor, with whom he shares two children, before marrying Priya Sachdev, a model and entrepreneur, in 2017.

The high-stakes legal battle is set to continue next week, with the court expected to scrutinize digital evidence surrounding the alleged forged will.
