Till the tribunals decides on NRC all are eligible to cast their votes: CEC

Speaking to newsmen here on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the 4th General Assembly of the Association of World Election Bodies, A-WEB, here, the CEC said that “The Union Home ministry had already given clarification and till the tribunals decide those whose names were deleted from the NRC will continue to have their voting right in the election".

It may be recalled that the NRC, aimed at identifying the alleged illegal immigrants, in Assam State, was published recently and more than 19 lakh people were excluded from the NRC and were facing uncertainty in the country.
As many as 521 Foreigners Tribunals will hear the cases of those people whose names had been excluded form the final list of the NRC in Assam State.

Referring to the ‘One Nation – One Election’ idea, the CEC said that the issue is very serious and has to be implemented only after completing due processes including amendments to the Constitution.

“In principle the Election Commission will support the idea of one-nation-one-election,” he added.

Strongly defending the efficacy of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), the CEC blamed that some sections of the society indulged in maligning the deployment of the EVMs.

Stating that the common man had widely accepted the functioning of the EVM’s, Arora said that “there is a lobby and some time some of our colleagues also join the chorus who are against the EVM’s”.

Underlining that EVM’s will remain to be deployed in future also, he said that “different countries have different ways of conducting election”.

Replying to a question, the CEC said that there is no any base in the claims over EVM tampering, he said that they are fully secured and one should not have any doubt over the authenticity on it.

The CEC also said that “the results of the Assembly election held in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Delhi were different compared to the Lok Sabha election held recently”.
