West Bengal: CPI-M activist killed in clash, 9 held

Kolkata/Burdwan, Feb 12 (IBNS): Nine persons, including a Trinamool Congress's student wing Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP)'s leader, were arrested for allegedly attacking a rally of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and killing an activist of the party on Thursday at Raina in West Bengal's Burdwan district, reports said.

According to reports, when a rally of CPI-M was passing by Shyamsundar College at Raina on Thursday evening, TMC supporters allegedly threw bricks and bombs aiming at the rally.

One 50-year-old CPI-M activist Swapan Malik was killed and at least 21 other activists were injured in the attack.

Condemning of the incident, CPI-M's state secretary Surya Kanta Mishra said, "Instead of legitimate food grains Swapan Malik of Raina is greeted and killed by TMC hurled bombs. His blood must not go in vain. Struggles should be intensified."

However, police arrested nine including a TMCP leader and charged them under several IPC ans Arms Act sections.

They were produced in a local court on Friday and judge sent two of them including the TMCP leader to police custody for 4 days and rest seven to four-day judicial custody.

Burdwan SP Kunal Agarwal told IBNS, "I heard about the incident. Our police force brought the situation under control very fast yesterday. We have started investigation into the matter and arrested 9 persons so far. Necessary legal steps will be taken."

However, local TMC leaders denied their involvement in this matter.
