Witch: 60-year-old man beaten to death by villagers in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district
Guwahati, Nov 18 (IBNS): Branded as witch, a 60-year-old man was beaten to death in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district by a group of villagers on Saturday night.
The incident took place Disobai Timung village under Bokolia police station in the hill district.
Police have so far arrested 19 people in connection with the killing incident.
According to the reports, a group of villagers of Disobai Timung village branded the 60-year-old man, identified as Socheng Teron, hailing from Langtuk Terang village, as a witch, after two people mysteriously died within a week in the area.
On Saturday night, the villagers caught Socheng Teron and dragged him from his house to a public place and tied up him with a fishing net.
The 60-year-old man died after a group of villagers brutally beat him by using bamboo, wood and other sharp weapons.
Following the incident, local police rushed to the area and recovered the body of the old man.
Police have arrested 19 people in connection with the incident.
The arrested people have been identified as Sarsing Hanse, Khiram Timung, Zen Timung, Dilip Sing Timung, Sankar Timung, Jirsing Timung, Kamal Timung, Gobin Timung, Arun Timung, Birensing Timung, Barim Timung, Mirje Engti, Kamal Sing Rongpi, Longri Timung, Richo Timung, Ananda Teron, Jirsong Timung, Babuson Engti and Ranjit Singnar.
“We were informed about the incident around 11-15 pm last night and immediately informed our senior most officers. A police team had immediately rushed to the area and recovered the body of the deceased person. We have so far arrested 19 people in connection with it,” a police officer said.
It is to be mentioned that, six people were arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in similar type of incident which took place at Klordung area under Bokolia police station 15 days back.
In July this year, President Ram Nath Kovind had approved the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015, converting it to an Act, which aimed at eliminating the superstition from the society and it imposes a punishment of up to seven years and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh.
