Another milestone for captain cool, Dhoni to play 300th ODI against Sri Lanka

Colombo, Aug 31 (IBNS): Though the fourth ODI between India and Sri Lanka has little significance in the context of the series, it will certainly be special to former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the senior pro will play his 300th 50 overs match on Thursday.

Dhoni, who has started his international career against Bangladesh in 2005, already achieved several milestones in his cricketing career.

The former India captain played two important knocks in the ongoing bilateral series that helped India to comeback from tough situations and win them.

So far, only five Indian players had played 300 or more International matches. The list includes Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh.

Dhoni, who is popularly known as "captain cool", led the Indian team to win T20 World Cup and 50 overs World Cup in 2007 and 2011 respectively.

Also, the Indian test team reached the number no.1 ranking under his captaincy.

Taking everyone to surprise, the most successful Indian captain announced  his retirement from test cricket in December 2014.

In early 2017, Dhoni had also taken a major decision of stepping down as the Indian captain and since then he continued to play for India as a wicket-keeper batsman.

Apart from the number of matches, one more milestone is awaiting for the former Indian captain and that is 10000 runs.

The 36-year old is less than 400 runs behind the 10000 runs mark which is achieved by only three Indian batsmen so far.

The fourth ODI will be more important for the Sri Lankan team to fight back in the bilateral series as they have so far being completely thrashed by the Indian team.

After beating Sri Lanka in the test series, India went on to win the ODI series 3-0 with two matches to spare.

The fourth ODI between the two teams will begin at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday.
